Michael Eugene Hayes, 55, of Kell died at 8:15 a. m. Saturday, June 5, 2004, at Doctors Health and Rehabilitation Center in Salem.  He was born on January 19, 1949, in Mt. Vernon, IL, the son of William Robert and Jeanette Dooley Hayes.  He married Tresa Shomaker, and he was an oil field worker.
Survivors include his wife, Tresa Hayes; two sons, Robbie Hayes of Bluford and Mike Hayes of Mississippi; three daughters, Stacey Hayes of Ina, Shalanda Hayes of Wayne City, and Amanda Hayes of Missouri; one brother Johnny Bob Hayes of Mt. Vernon; two stepbrothers, Charles Ray Leffler of Olney and Jack Leffler of New Jersey; his stepmother, Edna Hayes of Kell; and six grandchildren. 
As per the wishes of the family, his remains were cremated, and no services were held.  The Rogers-Atkins Funeral Home in Salem was in charge of arrangements.

Born Flora, Illinois, June 23, 1950; admitted to bar, 1977, Alabama, U.S. District Court, Northern District of Alabama and U.S. Court of Appeals, FifthCircuit; 1982, U.S. Court of Appeals, Eleventh Circuit, District of Columbia Court of Appeals and U.S. Supreme Court.

 

Education: University of Illinois (B.A., 1972); Cumberland School of Law of Samford University (J.D., summa cum laude, 1977). Phi Delta Phi. Chief Justice, Moot Court Board. Editor, Alabama Trial Lawyers Journal 1987—.

 

Served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army for two years as a prosecutor before enrolling in law school at the completion of his tour of duty. Steve graduated from the Cumberland School of Law (summa cum laude) in 1977. He then served as a law clerk to the Honorable James Hancock in the Northern District of Alabama before beginning his practice as a trial attorney. Steve has served as the President of the Birmingham Bar Association (1998), President of the Alabama Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates and as a member of the Alabama Supreme Court Advisory Committee on appellate practice for the past fifteen years.
