U.S. Army Reserve Member from Salem Killed in Iraq

A 23-year-old Salem man who is a member of the U.S. Army Reserves Individual Ready Reserves has died in a humvee accident in Iraq. The family of Casey Hills was notified of the death Wednesday night. The accident had occurred Wednesday morning.

Hills is the son of Tami and Mark Hills of Salem. His grandmother, Violet Hills, says all the family has been told is Hills was part of a mission into Iraq from their base in Kuwait. He had been assigned to Kuwait since last October. Hills had been scheduled to return home in late July.

Family members are flying to Dover Air Force Base today to await the arrival of Hills' body. No funeral arrangements have yet been made.

Salem Mayor Leonard Ferguson has alerted the fire and police departments to be on standby to provide an escort through town when Hills' body arrives.

Salem American Legion Commander Grethen Cavaletto says the legion will be taking donations to assist the family. She is requesting they be placed in sealed envelopes with the name of the donor. They can be dropped off from noon until ten pm Thursday (June 25), Friday and Saturday at the Legion bar.
